Aidan "Shotty" GoBang Matticus "Mad Matt" Monk Denak "Squid" Kalamari Arkena "Crux" Wyrnspire Ghost "Evil" Kaisar (Who were the parents that named their kid "Ghost" in the first place? Geez...) John "Mr. Popo" Ripper (Because I like the nickname) Padhraic "Spade" Mac Iaisre Llast "Man Standing" Orwell Jaceon "Pale-eye" Jenkins Bayeth "Nickname" Mal Cyclops "King" Rex
My practice/get-to-know-the-game run was pretty harsh... now that I kinda know wtf is going on, I'm ready to start over

Tutorial ticked "on" just because it's an extra couple of missions - I don't need the tutorial anymore, but I want this 2 or 3 sorties to basically vet-up my soldiers before it really gets hectic.
Operation: FINAL RAIN First op in full command of my unit.
Alien abductions reported in Chicago and Shanghai. Chicago's closer... and the US government is offering 4 scientists for our research labs.
Sq. Freddie Hughes - Heavy Rk. Cass P. Rk. Matticus Monk Rk. Padhraic Mac Iaisre
Skyranger drops the squad off at the waterfront, where activity was reported. Immediately see one of those weird canisters with the green gas emanating from it... Pucker up, ladies.
Cass is ordered to the door of a nearby building to make a probing sweep - quietly. Once she reports the building seems to be clear, Hughes climbs up the drainpipe to the roof. Enemy spotted... ugly buggers. Monk and Mac Iaisre advance to cover while Hughes takes position behind an HVAC unit. He's been spotted, though.
Enemy takes a couple of shots at Hughes, destroying his cover. Freddie returns fire, HMG raining death on one of the targets hiding behind some lumber. Cass advances to a window, looking out on the enemy position. Takes a shot at the other Tango, who's hunkered down behind some crates. She misses.
Mac Iaisre's got a terrible angle on the hostile, so Monk advances to a better vantage and takes it down. Team advances to take up position behind some shipping crates. Monk reports two more Tangos running into a shipping office across an open lot. They seem to be taking up overwatch positions, hoping to use that open lot as a killing field. But Hughes has his rocket launcher.
Advance the team to better positions, just in case. Mac Iaisre nearly loses his head but the enemy fails to hit him on the run... gotta be more careful, Padhraic! Hughes preps his launcher... fires.
Wide left. By a football field. Dammit.
Cass moves around behind a stack of crates hoping for a better angle, but she's got nothing. Monk, however, has a tough shot, slim chance - he's confident, though, so he takes it. Tango down. Mac Iaisre moves to take up sparse cover behind another crate and lobs a grenade.
That's the end of that.
Sq. F. Hughes - 2 missions, 3 kills Rk. Mac Iaisre promoted to Sq. Assault - 1 mission, 1 kill Rk. Monk promoted to Sq. Sniper - 1 mission, 2 kills Rk. P. - 1 mission, 0 kills... better luck next time, soldier.

Operation: BLINDING SHROUD
Got a report from the council about a strange substance reported in use by the alien invaders. They seem pretty adamant about following up, and there's pretty much nobody else who can do it.
Sq. F. Hughes - Heavy Sq. Monk - Sniper Rk. P. Rk. Kaisar
Skyranger drops the squad at an intersection by a restaurant and an iced cream shop sharing a city block, a new type of alien pod sitting right there on the corner. Hughes advanced to check it out and collect a sample while Cass and Kaisar head for the side door of the restaurant to prepare to clear the building. Monk heads for the ladder leading to the restaurant's roof as Hughes takes cover behind the short wall bounding the restaurant's patio seating area. Hughes spots movement inside.
One Tango heads out through the restaurant back door to the next street, Monk has eyes on from above. Second Tango takes a pot shot at Hughes, grazing him. Hughes returns fire, no dice. Unsure just how many tangos may be inside, Cass and Kaisar move cautiously into the building and stack up on the door to the kitchen. Monk takes his target with a headshot.
Tango inside the building leaps through the window from the kitchen to the dining room and sets up on overwatch. Monk moves onto the iced cream shop roof to get a look at the street at the far end of the block and spots another target. Hughes watches as Kaisar creeps up to the corner behind the alien inside the restaurant and guns him down, then advances to the wall between the restaurant and iced cream shop patios to report the shop looks clear. Cass heads out the back door and peers into the shop from cover, confirming clear. Kaisar moves out the front to join Hughes.
Hughes smashes through the window of the shop and stacks up on one side of the door, Kaisar following him and taking up position on the other side, the two of them covering Cass as she moves to collect a sample from the canister inside the shop. The Tango on the street advances from its cover behind a box truck to fire on Monk, catching him cleanly and forcing him to hunker down. Before Hughes and Kaisar can return fire, an eager-to-prove-herself Cass P. leaps the counter, smashes out the window and guns down the target taking cover behind a bench.
Sq. Hughes - 3 missions, 3 kills Sq. Monk - 2 missions - 3 kills Rk. P. promoted to Sq. Support - 2 missions, 1 kill Rk. Kaisar promoted to Sq. Support - 1 mission, 1 kill

RAVEN-1 managed to put down a UFO in the American southeast, and satellite imagery suggested surviving alien crew.
Operation: BRUTAL DAZE
Not knowing what to expect, I wanted my best. Knowing there wasn't much in the way of high ground, Sq. Monk sat this one out - he needed the time to dismantle and clean his rifle, anyway.
Sq. F. Hughes (Heavy) Sq. Cass P. (Support) Sq. Ghost Kaisar (Support) Sq. Padhraic Mac Iaisre (Assault)
Skyranger drops the team at the beginning of the UFO's debris field and Hughes immediately double-times it behind cover. Cass follows suit and spots one of those strange canisters. Doctor Vahlen always wants more samples, so I make a note of it. Kaisar takes to the trees while Mac Iaisre moves up near Cass.
I have Kaisar move up through the trees, closer to the canister and he spots movement. Hughes advances to a closer position and begins sweeping the area on overwatch while Cass and Mac Iaisre get into position. Mac Iaisre comes under fire and as one of the other targets tries to flank Cass, Freddie guns him down. Cass takes a shot at the one shooting at Mac Iaisre and tags it, but not fatally.
As Kaisar moves up on the canister, taking cover behind it, he spots two more tangos, further ahead in the trees. Mac Iaisre, unable to advance, pulls his pistol to finish off the Tango Cass wounded. He scores a hit, but the bastard's still standing. Hughes and Cass both attempt to put it out of its misery, but their shots miss. The creature returns fire on Cass, also missing. Ghost finally puts it down and Mac Iaisre advances.
Establishing that weird telepathic link they do, the two remaining Tangos split up, one hunkering down behind cover and the other boldly advancing on the squad. It takes a shot at Mac Iaisre and just barely misses. Cass moves to look for a flanking position, but she's too far and can't get a solid bead on the target. Hughes fires from his position, missing entirely. Mac Iaisre prepares to charge the thing with his shotgun, but Kaisar pops its partner in the trees, somehow killing them both. That link is risky, it seems.
Now Hughes moves in on the downed spacecraft and a 5th target reveals itself, this one's different. Bigger, looks better armed. I'm advising caution, but Mac Iaisre has a bug up his ass about not killing that one he'd shot and he charges right in, holstering his pistol as he goes, whipping up the shotgun and planting the barrel right under the monster's chin.
5 kills, 0 casualties
Sq. F. Hughes (Heavy) - 4 missions, 4 kills Sq. Cass P. (Support) - 3 missions, 1 kill Sq. Kaisar (Support) - 2 missions, 3 kills Sq. Mac Iaisre (Assault) - 2 missions, 2 kills

Operation: RED HYMN Abductions reported in Alexandria, Egypt
Sq. F. Hughes (Heavy) Sq. Cass P. (Support) Sq. Mac Iaisre (Assault) Rk. Jenkins carrying the Arc Thrower
Skyranger deposits the fireteam in the parking lot of an auto shop and Freddie hauls his rocket launcher to the roof first thing - appears clear. Cass moves into overwatch at the side of an open garage door to cover Mac Iaisre's advance, Jenkins proceeds along the side of the building toward the side door and takes cover behind a dumpster. Mac Iaisre runs through the parking lot from car to car and spots not only a Meld container, but also two Tangos inside the garage. Game on.
One target runs out from behind a car raised up on a lift and Cass puts its lights out - never saw it comin'. Hughes hang-jumps off the roof and sets up shop on the other side of Cass's garage door, HMG sweeping, eyes open. Mac Iaisre carefully approaches the container, keeping cover between him and the open garage doors while Jenkins sneaks in the side door of the shop, prepping the Arc Thrower. Dr. Vahlen better be right about her autopsy findings...
A second pair of Tangos comes in through the back door and Freddie blows the first one back into the other. Green blood dripping off its clammy grey skin, the second Sectoid posts up beside a workbench. Cass moves into the building to crouch behind a car and takes a shot at it, injuring it severely. Mac Iaisre collects the Meld sample and advances on the garage, posting up behind a pickup truck. He considers taking a shot with his pistol, but holds his fire. The wounded Sectoid returns fire on Cass and tags her pretty good, but not fatally.
Jenkins pops out of his cover to stun the injured Sectoid, taking fire from the one in the far corner as he moves. Fortunately, the plasma pistol missed him - that time - and he successfully stunned the wounded alien. Seeing Jenkins left out of cover, Hughes runs into the garage to take a shot at the remaining Tango and misses. Cass also misses. Mac Iaisre dashes in heroically to put a 12-gauge round into the target, but not before it hits Jenkins square in the chest, wounding him critically.
Mission success.
Sq. F. Hughes (Heavy) promoted to Corporal - 5 missions, 5 kills Sq. Cass P. (Support) - 4 missions, 3 kills Sq. Mac Iaisre (Assault) - 3 missions, 3 kills Rk. Jenkins - 1 mission, 0 kills

Cass P. was awarded the Stalwart Operative Medal (never panic due to teammates being massacred) for her steadfastness, stick-to-it-iveness and determination on the battlefield (and because I don't want the one with the med kit to lose their shit when it counts). Irony incoming.
Operation: BLACK DREAM UFO landing in Tibet Dr. Vahlen wants a captive "Outsider"-class alien specimen alive.
Sgt. Kat "Mama Bear" Hughes (Heavy), recent addition to the unit Sq. Monk (Sniper) Sq. Cass P. (Support) Sq. Mac Iaisre (Assault) Rk. Arkena Wyrnspire carrying the Arc Thrower
Team drops into a wooded area and Mama Bear runs up to take cover behind a tree on the far right. Cass P. moves up to take cover beneath a berm on the left and spots two Seekers, which promptly vanish. Wyrnspire goes to cover her while Mac Iaisre makes sure to stay relatively close to Monk as the latter gets into an overwatch position.
Sure enough, a Seeker appears to attack Cass and Wyrnspire makes short work of it. Good job, rookie! Mac Iaisre climbs up onto the berm to try and draw the other one out while Cass advances toward a Meld container, also on the berm. They can cover each other. Mama Bear Hughes sprints across the dry stream bed to join and cover the rest of her squad.
On arriving at the Meld canister, Cass reports three new bogeys. They look like the aliens have taken human remains and fused them with machines... gruesome things. Monk moves up for a shot, the Rookie in overwatch nearby now that Mac Iaisre is buddied with Cass. Two Floaters advance, one zips up to the top of the spacecraft - funny, they really are saucer-shaped - and they wait... they seem to be handling the fireteam cautiously. Have we taught the invader to respect our hand?
Sgt. Hughes adjusts her position and goes into overwatch right after Monk shoots one of the Floaters but fails to kill it. Wyrnspire dashes for a better firing position of her own, where she can engage the Floaters and still cover Monk, but as she's on the move one of the Floaters guns her down. Shame... she was doing well on her first mission with the unit.
Seeing the plasma from the Floater's pistol melt away a sizable portion of Wyrnspire's flash, Monk panics. Completely loses his shit. He's screaming how he wants to go home and takes a shot at Sq. P.! Fortunately he misses with the sniper rifle at relatively short range and Cass gets the hell away from him, advancing to a covered position to fire on one of the Floaters since there's nothing she can do for the rookie. She misses the one Monk had hit previously. If things weren't bad enough, the unaccounted-for Seeker chooses this moment to try and strangle Mac Iaisre. Mama Bear misses her first shot, but creams it with her second.
The injured Floater goes on high, coming down behind cover next to a tree flanking the team's position. Monk has a clear shot, but he's not here right now. Mac Iaisre takes care of it, though, charging around to put a shotgun blast point blank into what's left of the thing's guts. Cass fires and misses at a Floater that's creeping up on the other side of Mama Bear's cover. Mama Bear also misses it. Mac Iaisre runs up to take cover behind the same fallen log Sgt. Hughes is crouched behind, narrowly avoiding fire from the Floater in overwatch above the saucer.
The near Floater misses a shot at Sgt. Hughes and Mama Bear's return volley also misses. But Mac Iaisre, just about at the edge of his shotgun's range, aims true and knocks the thing right out of the air. Cass, with not much of a shot on the Floater up high, advances to lean against the hull of the spacecraft.
The remaining Floater brazenly vaults down to try and kill Mac Iaisre, only managing to graze him. Mama Bear punishes this mistake harshly and Mac Iaisre advances on the ship, leapfrogging Cass. Monk seems to be calming down, but he's not all there, yet. Cass moves up and spots the target - an Outsider. Unfortunately, the rookie was carrying the Arc Thrower, and she's dead now. Mama Bear rushes forward to offer support but Padhraic just rushes the thing like he did the last one. No more Outsider.
Cass carefully moves into the ship and takes cover behind a bulkhead; looking around, she spots a Meld canister just outside. Sgt. Hughes pushes forward and sets up overwatch in the middle of the ship, noticing a trio of Sectoids just outside. Two of them hop over a log for cover while the third runs up beside the door and fires in at Mac Iaisre, wounding him severely.
Cass rushes over to see what she can do for Padhraic, double-timing it to get herself behind cover next to him and reaching for her medkit. Mama Bear, seeing how badly this could get and how quickly it could do so, preps her rocket launcher and places her shot perfectly, blowing the log into matchsticks and killing all three Sectoids.
Mission complete.
Sgt. K. Hughes (Heavy) - 1 mission, 5 kills Sq. Cass P. (Support) promoted to Corporal - 5 missions, 3 kills Sq. Mac Iaisre (Assault) promoted to Corporal - 4 missions, 6 kills (Wounded: 11 Days) Sq. Monk (Sniper) - 3 missions, 3 kills Rk. Wyrnspire - 1 mission, 1 kill (KIA)

Arkena Wyrnspire wrote:That's exactly what I meant, yeah. LW gets a lot more complicated - you have two subclasses and in each subclass there's 3 perks to choose from each level. So instead of 4 classes with 2 perks a level, you have 8 classes with 3 perks a level. It gets harder to choose then. EDIT: Also goddamnit why on earth did you assign me as the arc thrower instead of an assault? I'm mad now. lol every downed UFO, I give the rookie an arc thrower - they still have an assault rifle though. But every time, that rookie gets wasted without capturing the Outsider. I'm beginning to get the feeling that I really needed the tech from the Outsider capture a long time ago... just lost 4 veterans off a 6-man team including a Lt. and a Sgt - both killed by bloody chrysallids. Important veterans. :(
Think I'm going to start it over and this time, rookies don't get the arc thrower when we go for the Outsider.

The important thing to get is laser weaponry so you can crush chryssalids successfully. I thought it sped up research time on some thing or another? And I got the laser rifle, but Chrysallids are eating two or three shots from it. It didn't have the stopping power to save Lt. Cass P. (with the triple medkit that revives at 33% hp) or Llast (who was a rookie with an AR and Arc thrower at the time...) from becoming zombies

I'm short 4 scientists from the practice run... I took a abduction mission for cash instead of scientists this time around to be able to afford the tech I unlocked. Maybe that's why I seem to not have the same things I had before? Though it doesn't seem like it should be such a dramatic difference... maybe I just got lucky before, or am very bad at this still xD

This is actually an excellent piece of advice. Remember: Rookies are your most expendable resource. It's not ethical. Firstly I would check that rookies stats to see if he has potential. You will want one with moderate Will, but not to high since keeping those rookies until late game is a must for generating Psionics. Expendable rookies come in the form of Low HP, medium will characters that won't break easily and hold the bait position and not shoot your dudes. Still you don't want to waste funds of rookies too much. Keeping one back for baiting is good, especially because they can grow if they survive into powerful allies. Early game I like to focus on skilling up 4 vets to their second tier skills, and equipping them with that Blue Combat Armour before you hit the Downed UFO/ Outsider. Ensure you have the Arc Projector and cap that Outsider first mission. Follow up with laser Beam, and Rifle tech before Crysallids and Muton appear, and after that you have enough fire power to progress until you can learn plasma tech. Are you advising ignoring some missions to hold out for tech advances?

Story mission = "Urgent message from council" or what follows shooting down UFOs or both? 'cause so far, it seems like I don't have a lot of choice in the matter regarding going on a mission or not. Like, say I don't have arc throwers yet when I shoot down first UFO (first appearance of Outsider). Can I shoot down UFO then not go on that mission, instead hit start scanning to progress days (and thus research)? Can I go on that mission at a later date, or is it just lost if I choose "ignore" to wait a few days for research to finish?
These are probably stupid questions, but I've only been at this for a few days :p
